GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) - Crystal Cathedral founder Rev. Robert H. Schuller has removed his son as preacher on the church's weekly "Hour of Power" syndicated TV broadcast.
Schuller said in a statement read to some 450 congregants Saturday by church president Jim Coleman that he and his son, Robert A. Schuller, "have different ideas as to the direction and the vision for this ministry."
"For this lack of shared vision and the jeopardy in which this is placing this entire ministry, it has become necessary for Robert and me to part ways," Schuller said.
Robert A. Schuller will remain as senior pastor of the Crystal Cathedral, though it was unknown whether he will continue to preach, a church spokesman told the Los Angeles Times....
Seems true enough. Maybe he should tell his dad the self esteem gospel is shown to have no effect by his dad's removal of him from the ministry. It would seem logical enough anyway...or raises the question "Mr. Schuller, aren't you hurting your son's self esteem with this action?" I would like to know what is the impetus behind the removal. If we knew why, we could then see whether or not this removal is scriptural or just some personality clash or family disagreement. Considering the dad's unscriptural doctrines...who knows? Maybe the son wants to steer more in a biblical and truly reformed direction to be more consistent with the Bible and the congregation's history.
The term Junior can still be used even if the father and son have different middle names and the same first name.
"Sons with a different middle name or initial may also be called Junior."
And in everday English, I think we know much better who Robert Sr and Robert Jr are instead of Robert H and Robert A, but the media of course follows a more formal and standardized approach which is not necessary for informal chats on the Web and this probably explains the use of Robert H and Robert A in the news articles.
I think the Crystal Cathedral is still part of the RCA. However, it can hardly be called reformed, considering what goes on there. I guess, Neil, this is one of those churches trying to imitate the "real thing." I remember as a boy going to see one of the plays there...they have big Christmas and Easter re-enactments. Looking back, I wonder about it, but at that time I was not too concerned with Biblical purity and was still steeped in word-faith worship and doctrine.
While it is easy enough to poke at the follies of yet another megachurch, please note: as in many lesser, more orthodox churches, management decisions at Crystal Cathedral are apparently up to just one man.
FYI, Schuller Sr. was originally Reformed Church in America (Dutch), & was a disciple of Norman Vincent Peale.
