Dawkins’ atheistic arguments are weak, Oxford prof says
NEW ORLEANS (BP)--The latest book by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, “The God Delusion,” is an attempt to shore up the faith of atheists, Oxford theologian Alister McGrath said at a meeting of the Evangelical Philosophical Society at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

The event was co-sponsored by the seminary’s theological and historical studies division and held in tandem with the Greer-Heard Point-Counterpoint Forum.

“I believe Dawkins’ book was really written to persuade atheists that their faith is still valid,” McGrath, professor of historical theology and senior research fellow at Oxford University’s Harris Manchester College, said Feb. 23. ...

I humbly ask that we do not dismiss him offhand!! he's got things very mixed up yes!! i agree, but listen guys/girls wer'nt WE there before Christ in his mercy through His Spirit showed us the TRUTH!!. Dawkins unfortunately is just another product of Science let loose without GOD as his Reference point!! .Lets pray for Him!! As agreeably to him but quite disaprovingly to us ,he tries to make sense of it ALL, without GOD!!? , what a hadicap!! Pity him,in your prayers for his soul!!

I am half-way into the book. Dawkins pretends to write as a scientist but in page after page disregards elementary rules of scientific writing. He lacks rigour and clarity in definition of terms, uses weak or irrelevant data and makes generalizations that are not supported by data. How does he expect me to take seriously whatever he says about God as a scientist if he does not care to stick to basic rules of the profession? Or is it already becoming increasing difficult for one to be a popular atheist and a good scientist at the same time. I think it is indeed.

I don't think that's quite fair, Leebird.

I'm sure Dawkins is a very clever scientist. The trouble is that he sticks his nose into things that are nothing to do with science, and in which he has no expertise.

You're right on the mark there, Vic.

If Dawkins really didn't believe in God, he wouldn't bother discussing God.

I find it hard to believe Mr. Dawkins is really an atheist. In order to spew the foolishness he does he must believe in God, and just hates him.

Alister Mcgrath has his own website @:

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mcgrath/

I have read a few of his books. If you want to listen to a lecture and elevate your understanding of things, take a listen to this lecture where he discusses this very issue:

http://www.citychurchsf.org/openforum.htm

Scroll down to his name.

It took me a few minutes to adjust to his accent.

This biologist, Richard Dawkins, has sunk lower than the devils...

"The fool hath said in his heart, [There is] no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, [there is] none that doeth good." Psalms 14:1

"Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."

Atheists are only atheists until they die...

Brother, use caution. I had a pastor who ended up leaving the faith when he started such talk about logic. Our logic is falible, and those who think it is not are on slippery ground. Take care my friend.

Logic is only mortal if it is not agreeable to revelation.

Just because spoken & written language are subjects of academic study does not mean an illiterate person cannot speak or understand. So also with logic. What logic we use soundly is a gift of God, like language.

Interesting!!
However mortal "logic" is not "super"natural, is it? nor can it be. Also I mentioned the academic value of salvation; - were this the case then the Lord might have precluded the lesser intelligent mortal from that same salvation.
Clearly the Lord does not display such discrimmination otherwise a poor dullard like me would be hell-bound for the lack of ability I inherited.

That's a false dilemma. Logic *is* supernatural. Contrary to what neo-orthodox theology has taught, logic is not man-made, "carnal," or beneath God; it is a part of His nature, & being made in His image, we are commanded to "think His thoughts after Him." Without logic, Scripture would be incomprehensible & salvation impossible. Communication and thought itself would be impossible w/o logic.

It takes logic to understand the proposition that logic is not supernatural, which of course is self-defeating.

Don't leave out the supernatural element entirely. Salvation does not have an academic value.

Scripture has a lot of "intellectual jousting." Jesus, being the Logos, is the master logician, reducing His opponents to silence or blind rage. We do well to emulate His methods.

Signpost: every verse containing "therefore" or "because" is likely a logical proposition.

If this was a time when the church was growing in terms of strong doctrine, as well as numerical size, then I might wholeheartedly agree with McGrath that the atheist/evolutionary arguement is "weak."

But clearly the reverse is true in these "perilous times."

Dawkins, et al, influence is more succinctly felt in these days, because the churches witness is at an all time low, within cities towns and villages (and churches) across the western nations.

The "Truth" is a caged lion which can fight for itself against reprobates such as Dawkins and their ignorance.

But as Christians, I think we should be careful of bringing religion down to a simple human intellectual joust between two factions.

Great article. I personally have not read the book, but I have confidence that McGrath was speaking the truth about the contents of it. It feels like Dawkins just wrote the book to try and strengthen his own belief in atheism. Hopefully God will soften Mr. Dawkins' heart and make him see that the truth lies within Jesus Christ and His redemption.
