London (CNSNews.com) - British lawmakers have moved one step closer to repealing a law that prohibits local government from promoting homosexuality with a House of Commons vote this week.
By a vote of 368-77, Members of Parliament (MPs) turned down an amendment that would have retained the controversial "Section 28" law. Moves to keep the law in place were led by Conservative Party lawmakers, including Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith.
A local government bill that will, among other things, repeal Section 28, will now move to the House of Lords.
The Conservative leadership also floated a compromise proposal that would have required legislators to revisit the issue every two years and would have given parents the right to vote on sex education materials used in schools. The proposal failed by a 356-127 vote.
