This chapter closes out the second major section of Deuteronomy. Moses is about to begin his careful and detailed instruction on the law for second generation’s life in the Promised Land. Before he does this he summarizes their obligations in this covenant, making one last urgent appeal for their careful, purposeful attention to the law. Having commanded them to fear God, he warns them of presumption. This sermon declares our desperate need for Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf, the great joy of having the Spirit’s work in our hearts, and the danger that we face from the deceitfulness of our own hearts.
