no one could be a more hopeless condition than the demoniac of Gadara. He was enslaved by an evil spirit. His condition resembles that of humanity influenced by Satan and under the power of sin. It is a stark contrast to the kingdom of God where Jesus gives abundant life. He must have felt rejected and beyond help. The only thing his people could do was try (unsuccessfully) to restrain him. It is not surprising that he self-harmed and lived in the tombs. He was driven to it, for he was more like the dead than the living. He even saw Jesus as a threat - "What have I to do with you?" Jesus represented the opposite of this man's condition. He did not know Jesus' grace. In spite of feeling an alien he was fascinated by Jesus and ran to him. The result was complete restoration. Mark's account continues with another story of slavery to sin - the man's countrymen, who preferred to have him dead than lose their pigs. They showed the same attitude as the evil spirits. We learn from this that: no one is beyond Christ's help; it is folly to listen to Satan; everyone needs the salvation of Christ; and his grace is most wonderful.
