We come now to the seventh and final sign that the apostle John recorded in his gospel account of our Lord's life and ministry. This one is the amazing account of Jesus raising His friend Lazarus from the dead. From beginning to end the story is filled with drama as John develops it to its climax. This was an astonishing miracle, perhaps the grandest of them all, because here the Lord conquered the last enemy – even death itself. Now, in this sermon I will briefly highlight the setting of the miracle, because the story is quite lengthy. I will concentrate primarily upon the performing of the miracle itself, and the impact that Lazarus' death had upon Jesus, even as He approached the tomb to raise him. From there I will seek to draw out a particular application as it relates to the Christian response to the modern criticism of miracles, We must be able to give intelligent answers, even though God alone can change the mind of a skeptic. Once again it is my prayer that God will bless His word preached as we continue our study of these fascinating miracles of Jesus.
