Jacob name means supplanter - one who schemes their way to the place of advantage. This passage tells the curious night in which a man met Jacob and wrestled with him all through that night.
It is important that we see here that God is the one who has initiated this struggle. Here is a man who has attempted to make all his own gains and to seize even the promises of God by his own self effort; by his own wits and wiles. And God comes out to meet this person and to strip them of every avenue for finding gain apart from utter dependence upon him.
God applies pressure and challenge to the life until the life releases its hold on the things of this world… until we let go of our own self centered; self dependent ways of getting things done. He wants to break us of our self sufficiency – where we supplant the rule of God for the rule of our own wills; where we supplant a trust in God for a faith in what we can make by ourselves of any situation for our benefit.
