In chapter 40 we had the privilege to “Behold Our God,” as Isaiah gave a vivid description of the majesty and glory of God. In chapter 41, we saw that “Our God Reigns,” with Isaiah's description of the absolute sovereignty of God. In the final section of chapter 41 Isaiah presented to us the futility of idolatry. Now, we come to what will be a highlight for the remainder of the book – we are introduced (in some detail) for the first time to the Servant of the Lord. All of the redemptive purposes and promises of God are directly connected with this Servant and His work. In fact, He is the primary figure throughout the entirety of Scripture. In this sermon He is introduced to us, and then several important aspects of His life and ministry are presented. As I develop Isaiah's description of Him, I will constantly refer you to the New Testament, for the writers refer to this text in several different places, and for a variety of reasons. What we have here is a revelation of God for the ages, for this Servant is none other than the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. To know Him is life eternal, with the guarantee of entering into glory forever.
