Aim: To bless and love our gracious God—and hence, to live for Him.
Doctrine: Our gracious God is gentle with His church, as we grow in Christ. Gideon is a good example of this, as the Lord gradually molded his leadership qualities.
Exegesis: The steps our gracious God employs in making us effective Christians: first, He allays our carnal fear of Him (vv. 22-23); then, He inspires our worship of Him (v. 24); finally, He commissions us to take over the world (vv. 25-27).
Further application: How our gracious God overcomes our many failings: in justification, all our sins are expunged in Jesus' blood (received by faith); in sanctification, our continuing flaws are also all atoned for—in Jesus' anointing of our souls (as a benefit of salvation).
Key verse: v. 23 ''Then the LORD said to [Gideon], 'Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.'''
