All of us perhaps have lost something of great importance only to find it later! And when what was once lost is found, it is time to celebrate. One might think that the religious leaders of Jesus' day would have been elated that the 'sinners'--the tax collectors and prostitutes-- were repenting of their sins and trusting in Jesus as their Messiah. But instead they were complaining that Jesus was spending too much time on the 'low life'. Having rejected Christ's message and having misunderstood Christ's mission, these religious leaders had no understanding of the heart of God! They thought that God was delighted when sinners burned in hell. To correct their faulty thinking, Jesus tells them three stories that depict the heart of God toward lost sinners: The lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. In the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus emphasizes the compassionate heart of God! Even if only one went astray, God would go after them. Jesus came seeking to save those who are lost. And as the good Shepherd, he not only goes after the lost, but willingly lays down His life for them. Jesus also emphasizes the celebratory heart of God God-- that there is great joy in heaven when one repents! Are you the reason for a party in heaven?
