Solomon's failures magnify the excellencies of the Savior.
His fall into apostacy was brought about by his taking foreign wives in multitude, who led him into worship of pagan gods.
The Lord warned Israel against such mixed marriages, warning that they would lead to apostacy. Yet the wisest king refused to obey the commandments of God, and married hundreds of foreign women. Then in order to accommodate their idolatry, he built them altars and temples to their false gods.
What a warning against fellowship with the world this should be to believers! When our friends and colleagues become more real and more important to us than the commandments of God, we will compromise and sin in order to maintain good social relations. It seems harder to cross a close friend (much less a spouse) than to obey the Lord.
Solomon did not perform the duty of a husband to provide spiritual leadership to his household. He did not attempt to reform his wives, but rather to appease them.
How excellent is the Lord Jesus! He is the bridegroom of His beloved church. He does not take His people to leave them in their depravity and shame - He takes us to beautify and cleanse us, and make us like unto His glorious person - righteous, holy, and sanctified.
Christ cannot be corrupted by His bride - instead, He cleanses her and perfects her. He came to call sinners to repentance.
Christ gave His very body to redeem His church. He shifted our blame onto Himself, that He might be judged for us and we might go free. This is the conduct of a noble and courageous husband, laying down His life to rescue His beloved!
Solomon had no cleansing sacrifice like our Beloved's!
