The Christian must never forget what God overcame, and must overcome to make him fit to commune with.
When the Psalmist writes to denounce the wicked it seems clear to us that he has a particular person or group of persons in mind. He is surveying a present distressing situation and he is musing upon what he is seeing. He is lamenting the upsurge of wicked or unrighteous people who are imposing themselves up the affairs of his world. We do the same. We see dirty politicians, dishonest business men, lazy fellow citizens, violent criminals, corrupt devotees to some immoral cause... and we lament the wickedness that finds expression in our world and seems to be closing in all around us.
But then under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit Paul comes along in Romans 3:10-18 and bundles together these references from Psalm 14, 5, 140, 10, and Isaiah 59 and here in Psalm 36 and applies them to all human beings. He applies them to all of us. And now we can't read over the passage as if it were describing someone else.
Have you ever rifled through a stack of photos... and you have shuffled past a picture of a particularly homely, haggard creature only to return to it for a second look... something about that person looked familiar... and then you see that it is a particularly unflattering photo of yourself. And then you find out that it is not even that bad a picture or that poor a representation of yourself. You actually look like that. You want to divert your eyes but the truth is there plain to see.
