Annas has not been condemned for his actions like Pontius Pilate. However, his was the greater crime in that he controlled the trials of Jesus more than anyone else. He was the high priest "emeritus" who had his sons and Caiaphus, his son-in-law, alternate as high priests. This was in direct violation of the Aaronic priesthood. Caiaphus was not even in the Aaronic succession. John records that Jesus was brought before Annas "first" (v.13). He was seeking to entrap Jesus before He went before the high priest and the Sanhedrin for formal trial. The entire process was a kangaroo court. Jesus had not been charged with a crime. There were no accusers, no witnesses, and the whole process began in the dark. These were clear violations of Mosaic and rabbinic law.
Annas and his family had grown wealthy from the temple traffic where Jesus had overthrown their money tables (twice). He had a clear reason to destroy Jesus. As Jesus was going through this debacle, there was another trial going on in the soul of the man who promised Jesus he would follow him to the death. Peter was not aware that a rooster was nearby ready to crow.
