How many times have we've said, 'Ive got to see it in order to believe it.' We refuse to take what other people say as truth. We need to see for ourselves. Jesus' entire ministry points tot he truth that Jesus is the Messiah. His fellow Jews in Capernaum had just witnessed a great miracle: Jesus fed 5,000 men plus women and children using five barley loaves and two small fish. But they needed to see more in order to believe. Moses had given them manna for 38 years and fed an entire nation. One or two meals of 'fish and chips' isn't going to impress this crowd. But unbelief is never satisfied not matter how much evidence is given. Jesus promised a greater sign: His resurrection from the dead. Yet in spite of the empty tomb, the Jews did not believe. Jesus used this occasion as an opportunity to teach the true meaning of the 'bread from heaven." He indeed is the "bread of life", the permanent satisfaction of the spiritual hunger within our souls. He calls on us to trust Him, to believe in Him. Seeing is not believing, but rather, we believe and then we see. God opens our spiritual eyes so that we can see clearly that salvation is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ! And everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him has eternal life. We believe and therefore we see!
