Abram had faith. Abram trusted in his God as he went out from Ur of the Chaldeans. This must have been the basis for his going out. The writer to the Hebrews tells us this in Hebrews 11:8. But Abram's faith was not yet "perfected". While Abram had faith, and it was this faith which was the basis, the mover, for his going out, this faith of Abram was not yet "perfected"; it was not complete; it was not all that God would have it to be. It was a faith that needed refining. Abram's faith was that which needed purifying. The OLD man needed to keep dying; the new man needed to live more and more. It was a faith which needed to grow and to mature; to be strengthened; to go from being that mustard seed, to being the largest of all garden plants, capable of giving shelter to others; able to withstand the stormy season, the season of draught, the floods.
And here, in Genesis 12:4-20, we are told that it was the LORD who would refine, or build up, Abram's faith.
