The theme of the entire passage we are dealing with could be entitled, 'The Great Exchange.' All that is myself in trade for all that is Christ.
The historical record of Paul's conversion experience can be found in Acts 9. Our passage is a corollary to that event. In it, we find what Paul was experiencing in the inner man as he tells his very personal account of his conversion in first person testimony.
Jesus essentially turned Paul's entire life upside down! Jesus Himself pointed to the crucial importance of this great exchange in the Gospels. In Matthew 16: 15-26, He says, 'For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it. For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?'
A very penetrating question indeed. One we should all consider very carefully. Our eternal destiny hangs in the balance.
