I think this is probably one of the most common questions I have been asked and one perhaps we have all personally struggled with. Context: Moses warns the Israelites to avoid idolatry in verses 16-28. When they see all that was around them, they may think "'I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.'" (v. 19) — that is, there will be no real consequences for my actions. Moses gives God's blithering threat against the man's idolatry. With this strong warning of what would happen to the land and to the individual, one might begin to wonder what really awaited them in the future. Will God keep them? Will they be exiled in the future? Will they be blotted out? They've seen what had happened to them with the golden calf, to Korah, to Nadab and Abihu, to their parents who did not obey and believe about entering the promised land, to the complainers, etc. Does God have something bad planned for them? ONE: The Secret Things belong to our God TWO: Revealed Things belong to us and to our children Rather than worrying about what might happen in the future and perhaps use idols to inquire into them, just follow what God has revealed to you. Concern yourself with God's revelation.
