In the first part of this chapter God spoke directly to His people. He is reminding His people in the Babylonian captivity that their day of deliverance has now come. The Lord God Almighty is now going to bring about their salvation by His mighty hand. The remainder of the chapter is the interaction that follows this great announcement. First of all, we see that Isaiah prays to God. Although this is his prayer, it is representative of the remnant praying. Secondly, we see the response of God. This is His attempt to comfort and console His languishing people. Third, Isaiah turns his attention to the remnant, calling upon them to awaken from their drunken stupor. Fourth, God has the final word, declaring that the wrath His people have known will now be poured out on their enemies. This is but a brief overview of the passage. I develop each of these points with significant detail. This is a great text for the people of God of any generation, but is especially suitable during those times of divine chastisement, when we find ourselves in the furnace of affliction. I pray that the Lord will bless His holy word to the hearts of His people.
