MATTHEW 5 Summary: From chapter 5 to 7, we have the sermon of Christ, known as the Sermon on the Mount, and he begins with what is commonly called the Beatitudes. Jesus shows who are truly bless or happy in the world. (1-12) He exhorts and warns his disciples that they are to be as "the salt of the earth" and bright witnesses and examples in gospel proclamation and good works as "the light of the world", and "a city set on a hill" and a candle in a room (13-16). Jesus also taught that he did not come to destroy, but to fulfil and establish God's law (17-20). He then taught the true meaning of God's Law and corrected their misapplication and wrong teaching of the Ten Commandments. He selected the sixth (21-26), the seventh (27-32) and the third (33-37) commandments to show the relationship between the moral law of God and God's Kingdom. He encouraged them to suffer wrong patiently (38-42) and to love our enemies, and follow the perfect ways of God the Father. (43-48)
