Adversity teaches the people of God lessons that prosperity cannot. The affliction of God's children ought never to be a wasted opportunity.
Taking the wilderness experience of Israel as something of a parallel to our own, we note first of all our experience: humbling. God's people are cast upon him utterly, and every lesson brings a blessing, and every blessing is a lesson. God feeds, clothes, and sustains his people through their humbling experience.
Then, there is God's purpose: holiness. The Lord brings his people through these times to prove our untried hearts, to demonstrate our utter dependence on him, to manifest his fatherly care, and to draw out loving obedience to him.
Have we, in the last year, learned from being humbled, and are we now ready to be blessed, or must we be further taught to rest upon God alone? If we are relying entirely upon God, then let us not forget the lessons of adversity as we consider the prospect of prosperity: it was the humbled generation who entered and conquered the land.
