It is terrible when a parent has to say of their offspring “I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.” . It was a tragedy when Noah realised that his son Ham had sinned against him. It was a desperate situation when David realised that Absalom had rebelled against him. It was a shocking thing when Samuel learned that his sons did not walk with God or in the paths of righteousness. And it is always a terrible thing when parents have to lament that their children are rebellious ~ it is tragic! But these words in Isaiah 1 go further than that – for this sentence is from God – and therefore it is ten thousand times worse when God is compelled to say of those whom he has created – “I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.” Yet that is the position that many occupy today.
