Unbelief is more horrific and daunting than any Goliath on the battlefield. Saul saw what anyone that day could see. He walked by sight after all and not by faith. That's how he led people as well. Saul did not believe; David did. David said, "I will go and fight." Saul replied, "You can't!" This is how it always is when sight conflicts with faith.
David responds to unbelief in the king by testifying of past exploits by the hand of the living God. A lion, a bear, or a giant named Goliath - it matters little: God is able. David evidently emboldens Saul since Saul bids him go and trusts that the LORD will be with him (v. 37). It's hard to know what Saul was thinking, but we know that the LORD would surely go with David.
