Ill conceived man-made plans leave scars for many years. In Genesis 21 we learn that division and bitterness have characterized Abraham's household for over a dozen years now. In stark contrast to the rejoicing and celebration of the first section of this chapter, we now see the mocking laughter of Ishmael as he taunts Isaac, his three-year-old half brother. Sarah demands that Abraham send Hagar and her son on their way. God tells Abraham to listen to Sarah's demand – not because Sarah's motive is pure, but because God's plan is pure. We find that God provides even for an unbelieving Ishmael, and we learn that simply because one is a physical descendent, and receives the sign of faith, does not mean that he is a true child of God. To receive the redemptive promises, you must exercise your own faith in Christ alone.
