Some of God's people have difficulty with regard to conversion - they forget that experiences vary and expect their experience to be the same as others. The stories of Lydia and the Philippian jailer show what is similar and what may be different. Lydia had a high regard for God - she worshipped with with others. Scripture is silent about the jailer - he appears to have had no interest in the things of God. Some people are like Lydia, having a commendable spirit but with the key matter missing. Others are like the jailer, only taking an interest when their life is threatened. In both cases it was the message of Jesus that changed them; even the earthquake on its own did not convert the jailer. Both heard the message about Jesus along with its implications. We are told 'the Lord opened her heart' - otherwise the gospel does not take effect. There is an eternity of difference between the person who is born again and called effectually, and the person who hears the call but does not respond. The jailer only showed interest when two things coincided - his life was threatened and he witnessed God's presence with his people. Some people need a traumatic experience to waken them, but they also need the presence and message of God. Paul presented the jailer with the gospel transaction - the terms of salvation including its facts, its call, and its promise. he believed, and he was saved. The results were the same in both cases - and are still the same. Neither had been baptised - it was appropriate for them to receive God's grace in this visible way. Both took responsibility for the spiritual welfare of their household. Both showed kindness to God's people (1 John 3:14).
