In this sermon I am going to conclude the second part of our study, which has been an exposition of each of the seven “I Am” sayings of the Savior. Today I will open up the seventh of them, when Jesus declared, “I am the True Vine.” What makes this saying unique is that it is found as the opening statement to a lengthy allegory. Therefore, it must be understood in relation to the overall point the Lord is making in the allegory. The allegory reveals the unique relationship between the true vine and the branches, or between Jesus and His people. The point of the allegory is that it is impossible for the branch to bear any fruit at all, much less abundant fruit, apart from abiding in the vine. So I will draw out the necessity of abiding and the results of abiding that Jesus Himself sets before us. However, since the Lord also addresses the consequences of failing to abide, I will open up that theme as well. Since this is such an important text for practical Christian living, once again it has been my prayer that God will be truly pleased to bless His word preached as we continue our study of our Lord.
