'They believed'. What does that mean? For conversion to Christ involves more than a change of beliefs. Jesus spoke of 'stony ground hearers'. We have an example of false conversion in Simon Magus, who 'believed Philip' when the latter visited Samaria. Simon was hugely influential due to his sorcery, and was impressed by the miracles Philip performed. In fact, there was a unique feature to the Samaritans' conversion due to their need to be assured of acceptance into the worldwide church. When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands he tried to buy that ability. It was a grievous sin, treating God as something inferior to himself. He was still trapped by his desire for personal influence and adulation. This shows that conversion is more than faith, it involves a change of heart, a new attitude to God and man. Humility and devotion to Christ take the place of pride and self-seeking. We can ask ourselves if we have a new heart by asking: do we love the Lord? do we deny ourselves for his sake? are we drawn to him in prayer and the Word? Do we treat him as Lord of all our life?
