As the Pharisees tried to establish their own, false kingdom, they displayed their legalism in the multitudinous rules they invented and enforced upon the people. Jesus' makes plain their wrong-headed interpretations of the Sabbath commandment. In doing so, He also shows that only the Man who perfectly keeps God's laws has authority to perfectly interpret and apply them. All of Adam's descendants are sinful, and therefore have no authority to claim infallible understanding of God's word. Only Jesus Christ, as the Son of Man and the last Adam, in fulfilling God's Covenant of Grace, has lordship over a right use and understanding of the Sabbath. Our worship today, then, is not to be regulated by our own ideas, or crafted to placate the tastes of one group. Our worship is governed only by the teachings of the One who is Lord of the Sabbath, even as He is Lord over all creation.
