There are many similarities between the church of Luther's day and the church at the time of the prophet Habakkuk. Habakkuk complained that the wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. He knew that judgment was necessary and inescapable. God was raising up a pagan people, the Babylonians, to judge and correct his people by making them captive. Nonetheless, Habakkuk prayed for renewal or revival in his day. It was no accident that Luther later wrote a tract detailing the superstitious practices of Rome and called it "The Babylonian Captivity of the Church." Habakkuk prayed for revival in the face of pagan captivity; Luther experienced it. It is good for us to remember the Reformation in our day...
