In this sermon I am going to continue the second part of our study, which is an exposition of each of the seven “I Am” sayings of the Savior. Today I will open up the fourth of them, when Jesus declared, “I am the Good Shepherd.” After the introduction, which will be a reading of Ezekiel 34 which describes the false shepherds of Israel, I will develop the words of Jesus. He basically describes who the Shepherd is and what the shepherd does. Whether true or false, good or bad, the shepherd does what he does because of who he is. So Jesus is the “good shepherd” because of who He is, and this is to be contrasted with both ancient and modern false shepherds – who do what they do because of what they are. I then conclude with points of application addressing our relationship to Jesus, as true sheep to the true Shepherd. This is a remarkably helpful picture of the Christian life. Once again it is my prayer that God will be truly pleased to bless His word preached as we continue our study of our Lord.
