Won't you be, please won't you be my neighbor? But what is a neighbor? What does it mean to be neighborly? A first-century Jewish lawyer came to Jesus with this question on his mind: 'What must I do to inherit eternal life?' Instead of answering his question, Jesus poses this question, 'What does the law say? What does the Bible say?' In doing so, Jesus draws the man back to the Scriptures as to the source of authority. The lawyer responds correctly: Love God supremely with everything you are, and then love your neighbor as yourself. A 'neighbor' therefore is someone we are to love in the same manner that we love ourselves. But in order to justify himself for his lack of love towards his fellow man, the lawyer asks another question, 'Who is my neighbor?" Jesus responds by telling him a story about the Good Samaritan. By the story we learn that a neighbor is anyone who crosses our path who has a need which we have the resources to meet. That's our neighbor. And to be neighborly means that if we see a need, we out of love meet that need. Responding in that way is both the essence of love and expression of our faith. So, won't you please, please won't you be my neighbor?
