"Verifying Acceptance" Ephesians 5:10 We look at a phrase our of a verse and a modifier that we are children of the Light and must walk in HIS light and countenance. How are we going to walk in the light? Paul says in this phrase we must walk by PROVING what is acceptable to the Lord. We are interested in how we can do that and must prove and try them as we try to walk in that light!
The main admonition is walk in the light as children of God (in that Light.) We partake of Christ promising to walk in a new and holy life as children of God! It is our desire (as we are renewed and strengthened with the Lord's Supper) to walk in that new and holy life as redeemed Christians do! But how?
We must PROVE what is acceptable unto the Lord. Is that not our quest and endeavor? Our quest is what GOD delights in. Paul gives this admonition knowing it is possible to work otherwise. That old man and part of us that does not delight in proving things that are delightful to God. How are we going to engage in this proving and testing? 2 things:
1. Objective standard. The Word of God is the standard for ALL of faith and living and we are guided in life by the inherent Word of God that ALWAYS leads aright! We use to hear about the battle for the Bible. We hold the scriptures before us and stand together with it as the standard!
2. It does not stand alone however and in addition to it (with scripture in hand obviously) there is the subjective Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ within us! A man without the Spirit can walk away, but not the child of God! Scripture must be in hand and the Spirit who works through the Word will convict us as we live day to day. Never let anyone rob you for the Word of God! Never! It is the ONLY guide of living and we will be convicted of it!!!
There is also a warning. These tools may not be relegated! Often times there is no place given to it. How often do we take scripture in hand? As children of the Light walking in darkness how often do we go to the Word of God to pass judgment on ourselves to make sure what we are doing is conformable to God?! Does God delight in what I do or endeavor to do? Do we ask the Lord what He delights in? (in our lives.) Is it pleasing to the Lord? PROVE what is acceptable to God! We must conform to our Lord Jesus Christ and let that Light shine through in every aspect of our life and let the Spirit guide us! Do not grieve the Spirit by walking AGAINST the Word of God!
Let's ask ourselves "is this to God's glory? Does God delight in this?" Then our prayer is answered and we will walk as a Christian with Bible IN HAND in a life and way that is pleasing to Him! That IS our reasonable service!
