And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full. – Luke 9:17
Is this not a wonderful promise, saints of God? Romans 5:20 says, “And the Law came in that transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” When God saves a sinner and a wretch like you, there is still grace left over. Even you did not exhaust His grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Is that not wonderful? Now this ought to stir you to humility and gratitude. He saved a wretch like you, and there is grace left over. He is the God of overflowing!
You see, this fits the nature of who He is. He is infinite, and He is eternal. He is not the "just-enough God." He is the God of abundance. He told the woman at the well if she would believe in Him, then from her inmost being she will not just have a little sprinkle. No, from her innermost being will flow rivers of living water! Today, we have reduced the work of God and the power of the gospel to some temporal good feeling we receive after hearing a psychological pep talk from a man we call a preacher. I want more than that. I long for God’s power and blessing to be on His church. I long for the miracle of the Spirit’s work of conviction of sin. I long for the miracle of the Spirit’s regenerating new birth to be evident in the people of God. I long not for the sprinkle of man’s feel-good religion, but for the rivers of living water sent from the throne of God. I long for the grace upon grace, the grace that abounds more than my sin. Don’t tell me this life now is as good as it gets. Don’t tell me Christianity is only a potion to help me cope today.
No, I’ve got to have more than that! I will not be satisfied with just feeling better on Sunday! I long for a better home, a heavenly home where there is no sickness, no sorrow, and no death. I long for a better fellowship, the fellowship of the glorified saints, fellowship with the holy angels, and fellowship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. I long for better pleasures, not the hollow pleasures that we chase after in this world but pleasures that are infinite, eternal, incapable of ever diminishing, and ours forever in heaven. He is the God of overflowing!
Pastor, how do you get a congregation of people who come hungry for God? Well, God has to do that. But, He is not going to do it with a little psychological pep talk from these hirelings we call preachers today. They are going to have to preach the biblical text in the power of the Spirit. That is what the truly regenerate in Christ long for – this God of overflowing!
