Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 30:7-9 (part 1)

"Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor and steal, and take the name of my God in vain." Proverbs 30:7-9 (part 1)

Whatever the term – bucket list, dreams, goals, plans – we all have some idea of how we would like our lives to go. One could look critically at Agur’s list and conclude that he was not a very ambitious person. His hopes seem to be nondescript, unremarkable, lower middle class, certainly not one to be emulated. A closer look, however, could be summed up in two words: realistic and Godly. First, he was realistic, realistic about himself. He well understood that his sinful nature was such that whether he rose to the greatest heights or descended to the lowest low, he was capable of messing it up. This realistic view of self is unusual in its grasp of depravity. At the same time, Agur’s prayer displays the greatest ambition – Godliness. He was willing to subjugate the natural desire for fame and wealth for the greater desire that God would be honored by his life. The idea that God might somehow be dishonored by his life was a greater horror even than the depths of poverty. It strikes me that Agur was not a fool to be pitied; he was a man of great wisdom.
