Temptation is a wild battle. Jesus knows this. As a man, he faced the full onslaught of the Devil himself. The reason Jesus didn't sin, was not because He was God, but because He used all of the resources of God available to Him as a man. This is a real victory! Consider a man who swims across the Atlantic Ocean. Yet as he swims there is a boat following him all the way. Imagine he actually completes the swim, and people say, "But there was a boat following you!" The man says, "But I actually swam across the ocean!" They say, "But you had a boat following you!" The swim was a real accomplishment, regardless of whether the boat was there or not. Jesus' victory was an astounding accomplishment, regardless of the fact that He was God. Here the Devil is tempting Jesus to fail to trust in God's provision. Satan is deceived; he thinks he will deceive Jesus. He uses deceptive lies. He is trying to get Jesus to believe He can avoid all of the suffering and go straight for the glory. This is the lie of the prosperity "gospel". In the true gospel, glory follows suffering. A gospel that makes the glory more important than allegiance to God is a satanic "gospel". There is no shortcut to the glory.
