1. The Obvious Bad investment.

20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

The fool forgot that this world is temporary.

If you lived in a border state during the civil war, and you had thousands worth of confederate money, knowing what you know now, what would you do with it? You would trade it in, that money would soon be worthless.

Everything you spend your money on with the exception of people and the kingdom of God will soon be worthless. People last forever. The kingdom of God lasts forever. Everything else is rotting.

All the stuff you buy, argue over, save for and love will end up in a landfill.

All the money you spend on your body and appearance is wasted, you will die.

1. The Deeper issues

Luke 12:13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

This man wants Jesus to settle his accounts for him. Jesus rebukes him. God will not allow you to use him to get money. Trying to use the true Lord of the universe to get money reveals what you truly worship.

Do you use God to get money, or use your money to get closer to God?

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’

The fool in this story looked to money to provide what only God can provide.

Rest – relax, that vacation is temporary, you will return to the rat race.

Food – provision

Celebrate – joy.

Money was going to make his soul complete, but that night his soul would be required of him.

This week I have found out how deeply I look to money to make me feel better.

Your retirement is already funded.

Your dream home has already been built.

Your joy will only come through walking through the pain, not by ignoring it.

Your lover already finds you beautiful.
