Luke 9:32 (NKJV): 32 But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.
It's a strange concept to us, this idea of being unaware of real glory. It is as if we were sleeping all the days of our lives. We go through life with our attention fixed on the things that we can see with our eyes, touch with our hands, taste, hear, smell... they are the senses of the flesh, they connect us to the world around us and allow us to function in it... but all around us, just a half a blink away, is a whole other world. It is a world filled with wonder, filled with awe, filled with GLORY. The glory of God fills the whole of all creation and declares, according to Romans 1:20, the character, nature and even the very attributes and eternal power of His Godhead!! God makes Himself known to us, through the glory that peeks through the cracks. He shows us His nature by the glimpses of truth that appear, those epiphanies of wonder, the unexpected arrest of our trundling, plodding, narrow existence... this glory is EVERYWHERE, all around, just below the surface. And when Christ was upon the earth with His disciples, they walked with God Himself and were unaware! Just think on it, breaking bread with God, and missing who was at the table! The blindness that allows that ignorance of glory is our birthright from our father Adam. It is the separation of our sin and the rebellion that spawned it. We are born into this life already dead, spiritually cut off, condemned and ruined. We have no concept of the truth of God's nature. Although we are born grasping after God in some fashion; we fall into the great sin of remaking Him into our image, instead of seeing Him as He is in truth. There is but one solution to this problem, Jesus said we MUST be born again. We must be born of the Spirit of God. He must call us to life; He must plant in us a new heart, a new mind, a new spirit... and then, when we are truly alive, we must awake daily with our minds and our whole beings searching and seeking the glory of the God who IS! Not a made up figure that is merely us in a new costume, but the God who called all things into being by the power of His omnipotent Word. And when we actually see that glory, we will finally understand the truth that the glory, and the light and the word all have a name; and that name is Jesus!! May we all see Him as He is, and worship Him as only He deserves!
