PROMISES

Whatever the Lord has ordained for the comfort, security, and profit of His people is revealed in His written Word. How important therefore it is that our souls be fortified in it.
David made these statements in Psalm 119 and how profitable to the believer. “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me” (v.50). Again he says, I will delight myself in thy statues: I will not forget thy word” (v.16). ”And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments” (v.43).
One of the precious promises comes to us out of Hebrews 13:5, “…He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.’ Those who study the Greek New Testament tell us that “He hath said” in the Greek text is very emphatic and intensive. “He Himself hath said,” that is Christ Jesus Himself personally made this promise. The word ‘leave’, is not from the usual word which means ‘to leave’, but from a word that means ‘to hold’ or to ‘sustain’.
There are two negatives before the word ‘leave’, and three negatives before the word ‘forsake’. The meaning is that of leaving someone and forsaking them to some helpless and hostile circumstance.
Therefore the promise is “He (Jesus Christ) Himself hath said, I will not, I will not, cease to uphold and sustain thee. I will not, I will not, I will not, forsake thee.” What an assuring promise! We will never be left to ourselves, never to be abandoned to the hostile and trying circumstances of the world!
The Apostle Paul experimentally entered into the promise and left us testimony to its effect when he said, “At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me…” “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion” (II Timothy 4:17).
My dear fellow believer, the promise was not to Paul alone but to all of God’s believing people. The weakest of saints, with the greatest, can expect his abiding presence; for He has so promised and“… all the promises of God in him (Jesus) are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” (II Corinthians 1:20).

“His every word of grace is strong
As that which built the skies;
The voice that rolls the stars along
Speaks all the promises.”
Isaac Watts
