Today we begin a planned seven part series on the subject of suffering. The intent of your pastor is to focus on the biblical view of suffering from different perspectives and provide real and helpful insights for everyday living. That is, I want these sermons to be practical for everyday life and real circumstances. It is also your pastor's desire to avoid a serious error; neglecting the message of the gospel and merely giving self-help lectures. For the Christian, understanding and coping with suffering, as well as the myriad other trials and blessings common to mankind, must not be isolated from the message and hope of the gospel. This is so because the gospel of Jesus Christ is not concerned only with justification – how we are made acceptable to a holy God by the imputation of Christ's holiness – but also our sanctification. So when I title these sermons "A Theology of Suffering" I do not want you to think that this is going to be merely a dry presentation abstracted from reality. Rather, my greatest desire is to open up God's Word to find understanding and hope in the midst of suffering. – Pastor Schlegel
