"Sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind." Luke 8:35

In this text (Luke 8:35) is revealed one who was desperate, needy, and condemned, and who could not deliver himself, nor could any others with all their efforts deliver him, Romans 8:7. And yet, when the LORD Jesus Christ passed his way, in the end we find him

1. Sitting (REST)- True rest is the effect of Christ’s finished work, Matthew 11:25-30. Such is the rest that the LORD grants to every one of His own elect, redeemed ones. They rest because HE did not rest until He had settled the matter before His Father, by His obedience unto death, Ruth 3:18. He is found sitting at the Savior’s feet, learning of Him. The posture of sitting is expressive of submission to His Gospel, of joy and rejoicing in Him, and His work accomplished for justification, pardon, reconciliation, adoption, and hope of glory

2. Fully Clothed (RIGHTEOUSNESS)- He was naked, as are all sinners before a holy God, without a righteousness, or, one that is no better than filthy rags. He is now "clothed" with the robe of righteousness, and garments of salvation, Isaiah 61:10. Here is a picture of the righteousness of Christ being not only imputed to him by the Father, but revealed in the Gospel by the Spirit, Philippians 3:9. It is put upon every redeemed sinner by God, once for all, because of Christ and His finished work at the cross, and received by faith.

3. In his right mind (RENEWED) - He came to himself like the prodigal son, and became sensible of the evil of sin, and was brought to Christ in true repentance, owning his lost estate, and made conscious by the Spirit of his need of Christ, and salvation by him, was drawn to Christ to cast Himself on His mercy, Titus 3:5,6.

This is the testimony of every elect, redeemed, called child of God. Because of His grace we rest, fully clothed in His righteousness, and renewed by His Spirit.
