Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 17:2

“A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.” Proverbs 17:2

Have you ever resented your position in life, especially as you compare yourself to others? You have worked hard, perhaps much harder than others around you, with the hopes of improving your position, but it always seems like there is someone else standing in your way. Usually, the person standing above you has all the advantages. “It’s not what you do, but who you know” is the common conclusion that often contains a lot of truth. As a result, frustration, bitterness, and resentment begin to color your view of life. There are two problems with this mindset:

  1. It ignores Christ’s own experience in life, and
  2. It ignores God’s sovereignty and purpose for our lives. Christ Himself experienced the bottom rung of the ladder. He modeled servanthood for us. The continual rejection did not deter or cause Him to quit in frustration and cynicism. In fact, it was the path of the servant that directly led to His exaltation. This is counter intuitive. The servant becomes the heir.

Secondly, our path in life is not ultimately determined by who we know, what family we were born into, or what advantages we do or do not have. Ultimately, our path in life belongs to the hand of a God of purpose. Isn’t this thrilling? Despite any perceived obstacles, God is directing my life with goodness and mercy. Isn’t this motivating? In this story, the wise servant is undeterred by his position. His wisdom eventually leads to his promotion over the foolish son and a right to the inheritance. God’s promise to His people is to raise them to a joint inheritance with Christ. All things are not against you. Instead, all things are for you. So, serve the Lord, and get to work!
