Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 13:7

"There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches." Proverbs 13:7

The question for today’s verse is: Where are you looking to accumulate riches? We live in a material obsessed culture that is obsessed with image, carnal pleasures, money, and excess in almost every physical area of life. There is nothing wrong with having things, the problem is when the things we have or don’t have, are the motivating factor that drives our lives. For some it is money; they become workaholic’s that neglect maintaining and building relationships in their families. These people do seem rich for a time, but eventually they grow old and are unable to keep up with the necessary work load. They eventually find themselves very lonely and poor despite the large accumulation of money they have managed to make.

For some, it is the relational side of life that is in excess. Many people turn to relationships to find their riches or fulfillment, only to find in the end, they are poor. Many men and women are seeking to find their peace and comfort through the arms of an individual who is expressly forbidden by God. Whatever the situation, God does not bless, nor do we find lasting riches in rebellious relationships.

However, there is a fountain that never runs dry. There is a well in which we can quench our thirst. All those who seek to find their riches in Jesus Christ, find that his promises, His riches, do not fade. Those who give themselves away for the service of the kingdom, those who deny themselves temporary comforts for an eternal weight of glory, come to the end of their lives, and find themselves rich.
