Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 12:16

“A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.” Proverbs 12:16

I have often consoled my guilty conscience over my quick and often irrational temper by glorying in my equally quick tendency to apologize and move on. I tend to view those who hold grudges as the greater sinner simply because I am not prone to holding grudges. God clearly does not share my opinion. Instead, He declares that the quick display of anger is indicative of a foolish heart. Meanwhile, He deems those who resist the urge to flash hot anger as prudent. How then can we who are prone to “hot flashes” become prudent?

  1. By embracing the preceding verse - “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes…” My opinions are not right nearly as much as I think they are. I only have one view (mine) of any situation. Opening my mind to carefully consider the viewpoint of others will slow the rush of anger.
  2. Humility – Even if I truly have been wronged, whatever wrong that has injured me is miniscule compared to my sins against my Creator.
  3. By loving mercy – The mercy of God always pursues those He loves. Those who intentionally keep the mercy of God before their minds also love to extend mercy.
  4. By keeping the offense in context – When my wife disagrees with me or sins against me, that offense does not mean that she does not love me. It simply means that she has made a mistake. The hot rush of anger, however, exaggerates the magnitude of the offense and removes it from its context of a sinner sinning. In the rush of anger, it assumes that the sin is a sign of betrayal. While ridiculous, if we do not keep the sin in its proper context, our minds are capable of such foolish conclusions.
