This verse gives a common sense statement on human nature. The wicked desire to become more wicked: the righteous desire to become more righteous. This verse goes straight to the core of the issue. In this comparison/contrast, it is the root of the righteous that yields fruit. So, it goes to say, that it is the root of the wicked that desires evil. The root of all humans fall under one of two categories: the righteousness of Christ, or a depraved heart. Who makes one to differ from another? It is the mercy of God that any of us may lay claim to the root of righteousness. However, it is also just as much to our own condemnation if we live a life that willfully gives itself over to the selfish root of our depravity. This is a principle that ought to lead us to prayer and obedience, that we might confirm the work of Christ in us. Not that we would add to it, but that we might live in light of the power of the gospel and not as those who will one day hear the chilling phrase, "Depart from me you workers of lawlessness, I never knew you."
