During the American Revolution, a man rode by a group of soldiers. Most of them were digging, but one soldier was sitting on a horse, just watching the other soldiers work. The stranger asked why he wasn’t helping, so the soldier said, “Don’t you know that I am the corporal?”

The stranger got off his horse and started helping the men. When they finished the project, the man got back on his horse and said, “Corporal, next time you see your men doing work and they can use some help, why don’t you call for the Commander-in-chief? I’ll come back, and I’ll help you again.”

It was pretty embarrassing that the soldier didn’t recognize George Washington, but it was much more embarrassing that he sat on his horse watching his men and didn’t help them.

Are any of us greater than our Master? Absolutely not! If He is willing to humble Himself and sacrifice, shouldn’t we? In this story, George Washington was a great illustration of what Christ has done for us. We, however, are often like the man on the horse. When we fail to serve others, we are basically saying that we are more important than Christ. Why? Christ became a servant, even though He was and is the King of Kings.

If Christ could wash the feet of His disciples, surely we can pick up a shovel and help people out. Today, take time out of your schedule and lend a helping hand.
