Putting up with foolishness and constant conflict in a loved one can be very draining. Our passage today speaks of the foolish son and the contentious wife, but could just as easily be applied to the foolish daughter and contentious husband. The point of what Solomon is communicating here is that who you are choosing to be today is having an impact on those around you. Are you choosing to be foolish? We could place lazy, busy in worthless pursuits, rebellious, ungodly, and many more things in the slot for foolish to make it more personal. If these things describe you, you need to realize that you are choosing to cause a lot of heart ache and stress in the lives of those who love you. Are you choosing to be a constant source of conflict through your unending nagging and complaining about things not being the way you would prefer them to be? Do you stay busy complaining about all of the things that you wish were different about your life or the other people in your life? If so, you are choosing to cause a lot of stress and conflict in the lives of those who love you. The problem in both cases is that the individual causing the heart ache is so consumed with themselves that no one else matters. They are building their own little kingdom, and will hurt whoever they have to in order to get what they want. If this is you, I want to encourage you to pursue a better kingdom, one that is not build at the expense of others, but through loving others. If you are the individual who is enduring foolishness and conflict, I would point you to the cross; where Christ willingly bore all of your foolishness and selfishness. Look to Him for wisdom and grace in your time of need.
