Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ…” Philemon 1:1a

A prisoner. That doesn’t sound very noble or honorable does it? However, because of Paul’s relationship with Jesus Christ, even being “employed” as a prisoner could be an honorable situation in life. To be sure, Paul was a prisoner because of his faithfulness to Christ. But, as time passed away in prison, was Paul ever tempted to feel that his lot in life was now a waste? That his occupation was now without any real significance?

I don’t know if Paul ever felt that way, but you and I might. The fact is, if we are ultimately employed as servants of Jesus Christ, we have the most noble and prestigious profession in life. Whether our earthly station has us mopping floors or signing off on big business deals or somewhere in between, what ultimately matters is if we’re doing those things as Christ’s servants.

Remind yourself today, “I am a servant of Jesus Christ.” That makes mopping the floor significant. It also humbles the high-flying businessman to say, “No matter how big a sale I just made, ultimately what matters is if I’m serving Christ.” Our significance as His servants is not because of who we are, but because of Who we’re serving. Serve Him!
