Sowing and reaping is a recurring theme in Scripture. Foolishness always results in frustration. The journey towards happiness and fulfillment is hijacked by foolish thinking. The experience of the prodigal son illustrates this truth. He left home to pursue fulfillment. Each decision on his journey was made with the goal of finding fulfillment. But each decision was hijacked by his foolish, selfish thinking, and so as he wrestled with the swine to secure supper, he knew only frustration. But in his frustration, he found wisdom. He looked into the mirror and found the robber of his fulfillment. His enemy wasn’t his father, his bad luck, or any other circumstance. It was he. And that is the message of this proverb. At the dead end of foolish pursuits, fools play the blame game. We blame parents, childhood, bosses, doctors, teachers, preachers, friends, the government, etc. At its root, this foolish exercise blames a sovereign God. Are you frustrated today with where you are in life? Let me encourage you to begin path to joy by first taking a long look in the mirror. Let me also encourage you that fools can become wise. The prodigal became wise by turning from himself and back to his father.
