As we watch civilization crumble around us, we often feel helpless to make any difference, to stem the tide of ungodliness. We pray, but we wish there was something larger, more significant that we can do. This passage challenges that helpless thinking. It reminds us of God’s words to Abraham regarding Sodom. If there were just 10 righteous people, the city would have been spared. God’s word to us is clear-Society is exalted when righteous people live righteously. Instead of wringing our hands, we need to be serious about righteous living. Righteous living is imitating Christ. Yes, Christ was sinless. Righteous living includes mortifying our flesh and fighting internal sin. But Christ also was invested in blessing society. He was constant in His acts of compassion to the hungry, to the sick, to the poor. Does this sort of righteousness characterize your life? Are you imitating Christ through righteous living?
