HOLY CONFIDENCE “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
These words come from a soul convinced of the matter at hand. Help wanted, needed, and desired, could and would be received from the holy sanctuary, the “hills” of glory; from Him who purchased help by the sacrifice of His body and blood. The soul expressing itself so boldly has a divinely produced confidence that refuses to rest in anyone or anything outside of its redeeming God. Oh, that He would renew afresh this day such confidence, unfeigned and untainted, in each of our hearts, causing us to rest in, believe on, rely upon, and wait on Him alone. The Psalmist had experienced help from Him to whom he looked; therefore he would look again. Have we not those times to reflect upon when present help is needed? Why not look there again! Why not trust and wait! Help is forthcoming. We have the promise; “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16). Help comes to believers only from above; they’ll look elsewhere in vain. The arm of flesh will fail you! Let us lift up our eyes with hope, expectance, desire, and confidence. Satan will endeavor to keep our eyes upon our sorrows that we may be disquieted and discouraged; but there is good cheer to those who lift up their eyes, for soon they shall have their hearts lifted up as well. The text doesn’t read “Shall I lift up mine eyes to the hills?” But “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from there my help will come. Maybe you ask, “Pastor Worthan what do you mean by the hills?” Let’s consider the hills of God: His purposes; His divine attributes; His immutable promises; His covenant, ordered in all things and sure; His providence; His predestination; and His proven faithfulness. These are the hills we must look up to. From these our help will come. We need help, help that is powerful and efficient, help that is present and constant. What a mercy we have in our God. He would sooner destroy heaven and earth than permit His people to be destroyed. Maybe you are not one of His people but you desire to be. Your help is in Jehovah, the Lord God Almighty. He who created all things and has everything at His disposal is equal to every cry and emergency call that comes to His ear. Lift up your eyes and cry out to Him today
