Separated unto the LORD

“For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens,” Hebrews 7:26

Everything about the LORD Jesus is the fulfillment of what was written of Him afore, first in God’s eternal decree, and then in the inspired Word of the Old Testament. Hebrews 10:7 -“Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me,) to do thy will, O God.”

Separated unto God the Father- ‘High priest’- In the Old Testament, Aaron and his sons were anointed (consecrated) as high priests unto God, Leviticus 8:12. The role of the high priest was to represent those sinners who were objects of God’s favor. Therefore, his person and role were to answer to every need of the sinner, to be his advocate before God, with the exception of being a sinner.

Separated unto holiness- ‘Holy,’ Not the word of Hebrews 3:1, but a word seldom used in the New Testament (except in quotations), though of frequent occurrence in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament as in Deuteronomy 33:8; Psalm4:3, Psalm 16:10; Psalm 132:9; Psalm 132:16): The idea contained is that of holy purity. The next word ‘harmless,’ may denote either freedom from malice or evil, or freedom from guile (Romans 16:18). ‘Undefiled’, free from the pollution of sin. Clearly, there were no high priests before Christ who were sinless, yet they were separated unto God as holy, harmless, and undefiled in a ceremonial purity, as a shadow, or type of the person of the LORD Jesus Christ who came to save sinners, and was numbered among them, YET WITHOUT SIN, Hebrews 4:15. Those today who would attribute to the LORD Jesus ‘sinfulness,’ as the Substitute do so to their own peril and ruin. He was ‘made sin’, yet was never made sinful. He represented sinners before the Father, but in no way became a sinner. He took the sin of His people, without taking their depravity. His soul was made a sin offering, without ever being tainted in the least with the sin that He bore, 2 Corinthians 5:21. Only a sinless High Priest and sinless Sacrifice could satisfy a Holy God, and enable HIM to be just and justify.

Separate from sinners. —These words may be understood in two ways. With reference to what comes before, it continues the truth of Christ being ‘undefiled,’ This reaffirms the perfect sinlessness of our LORD, who lived among sinners and yet was ever separated from their sin—not needing external separation to preserve Him from pollution. If this expression is joined to what follows, ‘made higher than the heavens,’ it points to the complete severance which now exists: between the victorious, risen, exalted LORD, who having once for all put away the sin of His people is forever removed from a life in the midst of transgressors. His work is complete as the sin-Bearer, and He bears their sin no more. It is put away, and there is therefore, NOW, no condemnation to those who are in HIM. Hebrews 9:28, Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 8:1; Ephesians 4:10.

What a glorious High Priest and representative of sinners He is. “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16
